DIY Wood Crate

I’ve seen these cute wooden crates as different types of decor and I really wanted one.  So I decided to make one!

No joke, this cost me nothing to make!  I’m pretty sure that you could make one at no cost as well.

Full disclosure: This is not a fancy, durable crate!  It’s a cheap knock off that I made that looks pretty and shouldn’t be used for anything crazy heavy or moved around a bunch.  I don’t want you guys to message me upset if your project falls apart. ?

You can get paint sticks for free at any hardware store. I just bought a pack for a couple dollars online because I didn’t want to leave the house(was that too much information, sorry! haha!)?

I simply cut off the edges of the paint sticks and used my miter saw. Paint sticks are weak so it was super easy.

I cut six of them, two for each side and two for the bottom. You won’t need the odd shaped ends, I was just showing you where I cut them.

To make the end pieces, I just measured the width of the ends of two paint sticks. One of the paint sticks weirdly had a ruler on it so I used it to help me measure. You’ll need to do this twice for a total of four pieces.

I then stained them with the usual stain that I feel like I’ll never run out of! I also used this stain for this project and this project.  I love it!

Here they are all stained. Let them sit for at least a day to dry! I tried using them a few hours later(I was impatient) and they were sticky and weird feeling. It probably won’t work if you don’t give them time to dry.

The next day I tried using my nail gun to attach each piece. This DID NOT work!  The paint sticks were crazy thin and even the tiny nails from my nail gun couldn’t keep them together.

I then did the lazy route and used a hot glue gone. It worked!

The glue has little pieces poking out once it dried, I just picked them off and wiped it down.

There you have it! It’s done!

At first I used it just to put little plants in it:

Here it is on my shelf along with the glass dome succulents and painted peonies. ?

I ended up having to rearrange this entire shelf because my son accidentally threw a huge toy in the direction of this shelf and the glass dome and pineapple fell off and shattered!  Luckily everyone was fine, I just had to move around and add things to the shelves.  To change up the wood crate, I decided to add the glass honey bottles and this is what I came up with:

It gives it more of a farmhouse/fancy vibe right? I like it!

Here they are updated and suited around! Including my wooden bead garland and the West Elm Knock Off that I made! This area of shelves is just full of DIY stuff!

So what’s the verdict one this?  I think it’d be fun to make an even bigger one(where the nail gun actually works on the wood) to have as a centerpiece for the kitchen.  What would you do differently or add?  I think I’d love to try it with the larger paint sticks, do you know what I’m talking about?  That’d be fun to try.   I love hearing about things that you’re making!  Be sure to check out my other projects and to stop by on social media to say hello!  Love you all!
